Tech Tidbits: 9-8-2012

What the heck is everyone talking about this week?

Kindle Announcement

Yes, Kindle announced new Kindle’s and Kindle Fire’s. The biggest announcement was the inclusion of an 8.9″ Kindle Fire HD. Amazon is doing it’s best to compete with the iPad. Will Apple announce a smaller 7″ iPad this fall?

Oh, and if you want to trade in your existing Kindle Fire, see this link.

Nokia Windows 8 Phones

Nokia announced it’s new phones, the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 that will run the Windows 8 operating system. They have a 4.8″ display, Near-Field-Communication (NFC). AT&T and Verizon have confirmed they will be selling these new phones.

In the past, Windows-based phones have tanked. If Microsoft is to make it in the cell phone world, the Windows 8 phones have to be a big ht. If not, Microsoft can kiss the cell phone arena goodbye. I would also expect Windows 8 tablets to be announced soon.

Apple dropping iPhone 3GS

When Apple announces the iPhone 5 next Wednesday, expect them to announce that they will be dropping the iPhone 3GS from the lineup. That would be typical, if Apple follows history on how many phones it has in the lineup. Also expect the iPhone 4 to have a price-drop to free.

Apple creating a Pandora Rival?

I am actually surprised this has not happened sooner. Apple revolutionized the music world with the iPod. I will follow this rumor and let you know when more info is available. Oh, and Pandora’s stock price tumbled by 18% once Apple made this announcement.

AT&T Expanding LTE network in 7 cities

AT&T has expanded it’s 4G LTE network in the following 7 cities:

Omaha, Nebraska Anchorage, Alaska Modesto, California Jacksonville, Florida Bridgeport, Connecticut Bakersfield, California Syracuse, New York

A few dozen more cities will be getting the 4G LTE network by the end of the year, including Portland, Oregon.
